Reader's Guide:

Our daily readings are taking us deeper into Israel’s wilderness years. The events that take place in this era echo through the rest of their relationship with God. From this point, they will repeatedly refer back to these events as hallmarks of their own unfaithfulness and God’s faithfulness to them (see Ps. 78 for one example).

In Monday’s reading, we’ll observe God’s deathly serious view of the priesthood of Aaron and his sons. It was a fearful thing to be assigned this great responsibility, but God was gracious in giving it as a gift to Aaron’s family.

Tuesday’s reading will show us many of their responsibilities in receiving this gift.

Wednesday’s reading discusses laws about purity before God; a fitting companion topic to the priestly requirements in the preceding section.

On Thursday and Friday, we will see two specific effects of Israel’s failure to enter the Promised Land: the deaths of Miriam and Aaron in the wilderness. We’ll also see the spiritual failure that ultimately kept Moses from entering the land of rest. Israel is still a toddler by standards of national lifespans, and their spiritual wobbliness (probably a bit too generous of a term) is showing. May we learn greater faithfulness from their continual, colossal failures.
