Reader's Guide:

This week’s readings contain another one of those pivotal moments in the grand arc of the Exodus and the wilderness years: the bad report of the spies and the people’s rebellion at Kadesh-Barnea (Nm. 13-14).

This event, similar to the Golden Calf incident in Exodus 32, highlights just how easy it is for God’s people to utterly lose faith in him. This event will be remembered by other Bible writers as rebellion, which attests to how thoroughly the people had failed to have faith that God would do as he promised. They allowed their fears to overcome their faith, and they flat-out disobeyed God. Whatever reasons they might have had (and however similar those reasons may be to our own disobedience at times), they rebelled against God’s will, and they suffered greatly for it. It’s an important milestone in their national lifetime, and not a good one.

The rest of this week’s readings will loudly echo the extreme importance of obeying God. They will remind us of the seriousness with which God expected (and still expects) his people to approach him and his laws. So read well, and let these narratives and teachings sink in as we think about how highly and soberly we ourselves esteem our heavenly father.
