Reader's Guide:

This week’s assigned readings all have an arresting, engaging quality about them. Here are some observations to guide us as we read each day:

  • Numbers 8 is like a procedural manual for Levites. And there is value in things like this, as they remind us of the seriousness with which God expects to be approached.
  • Numbers 9 shows the first observance of Passover as a feast (i.e. not on the night of the tenth plague), and it adds a little to our understanding of the event. Namely, that God allowed others who believed in him to share in the feast.
  • Numbers 10 shows the scale and purposefulness of the operation when the people moved on from Sinai. It also gives us an interesting note about Moses’ brother-in-law joining himself to the people of God (vv. 19-32). That’s a moment when we see the ideal at work: Israel as a light to the Gentiles, bringing them closer to God.
  • Numbers 11 demonstrates God’s grace as he provides for his people’s needs, even when they are underserving and ungrateful for it.
  • Numbers 12 shows that even in Moses’ time and in his own family, people struggled to accept the leadership of God’s chosen one. It also shows us just how important and exalted Miriam’s place was in the narrative—she is looked up to alongside her brothers (cf. v. 15).
