Reader's Guide:
This week’s readings basically fit into two categories of subject matter: religious regulations and Israelite social justice. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Monday’s reading is about the sacrifices that would and would not please God.
- Tuesday is about all the feasts and festivals in the Israelites’ yearly calendar.
- Wednesday is about three things: holy items (because they were in God’s dwelling place), a holy name (because it is God’s), and holy people (because they are God’s image).
- Thursday’s reading is about the year of Jubilee and the generous return of all land to its original owners, whether they can really afford it or not.
- And Friday’s reading, going along with Thursday’s, gives two more important ways that God wanted his people to help the poor among them.
Even if some of these details escape us, I hope that we can clearly hear God’s heart behind the regulations. In all of these things, he teaches us to honor him as holy and to care about everyone — especially those in need — who is made his image.
