Reader's Guide:
There’s one key word in this week’s readings: HOLY.
This week, the book of Leviticus will emphasize the ongoing and serious need for God’s people to keep separate from their neighbors, be pure in their conduct, and remain exclusively and fully devoted to YHWH their God. The sections that prescribe godly sexual morality and that prohibit pagan worship practices may grate against our sensibilities somewhat, but taken in context of chapters 17 (a holy place for God’s sacrifices), 19 (the holiness of relationships with God and with neighbors), and 21 (the holiness demanded of the priests)… they make perfect sense. Altogether, these passages were spoken by God to make his people unique. Ultimately, they were intended to teach them how to become like God himself: holy.
