Reader's Guide:
The book of Exodus contains two major sections: the narratives and the laws. The split between the two isn’t a hard one (a few narratives still show up in the ‘laws’ section), but beginning with this week’s readings, we will notice that major shift in the writing.
The second main section begins with the Ten Commandments, which we’ll read on Monday. From there, we’ll get into lots of the regulations that God gave to create a people group all his own—statutes about worship, about how to treat other humans, about societal equality, and about festivals and sabbaths (which we’ll hopefully discuss at length in next Sunday’s sermon).
Many modern readers find these sections of the Bible to be boring, and I understand that to some degree. But stick with it, and we’ll see as we continue reading that the rules which he gave his people were a blessing because they were so thoroughly, truly good.
