Reader's Guide:
Here’s a roadmap for this week’s daily reading schedule:
Monday’s reading is a genealogy roster. Be patient, remember that even as difficult as they are to read, they are also the inspired words of the Holy Spirit. Take your time, and read with reverence.
Tuesday’s reading shows us one main point: that God actively wants his people to succeed in the new land they will soon posses. He graciously gives land to a family with no sons so that their family tree will thrive in the land, and he appoints Joshua to take Moses’ place as the people’s leader.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll get a reminder about the regular worship procedures in Israel. It will probably sound like a lot of sacrifices. That’s because it was. And that shows the seriousness of sin—that it always exacts a very high cost.
On Friday, we’ll read a section about men and women making vows before God. This section is confusing for several reasons, but here are two truths that may help sort it out: 1) God held [and holds] men responsible for so much of the general spiritual strength or weakness among families and among his people at large. And if we think, “But that’s not right; women are more spiritual than men anyway,” that just shows exactly how far even we have fallen from understanding male spiritual responsibility properly. 2) The fact that a man could exercise some kind of power over his wife does not inherently mean that he would do so (cf. Elkanah’s response to Hannah’s vow in 1 Sam. 1:21-23). So we should not think that these laws taught men to be oppressive and controlling—what God did was give them the right to lead their wives in wisdom and faithfulness.
